The Needed Medical Care Was There
What is different this time is that
the injuries that caused the amputations in the Civil War soldiers
on the left were most likely minor wounds by today's standards.
On the right are a group of service personnel whose
injures were such that had the Civil War Soldiers received them,
they never would have left the field of battle alive. Today's
medical care, both on the battlefield and off, has made our
currrent conflicts the most survivable in history. However, with
survival, there is cost. With the Veterans on the right,
the visible amputations may just be the tip of an unseen
iceberg. Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder are likely co-occurring disabilities with the injuries
seen here.
