College to Career (C2C) programs are part of a Department of
Rehabilitation (DOR) funded initiative developed in FY 2010-2011 in
collaboration with the California Community Colleges' Chancellor's
Office. Five Community Colleges have C2C programs funded by DOR.
Each college was funded $250,000 per year, beginning in 2011, to
develop pilot pre-vocational and vocational training programs for
individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Funding will
continue for four years. The five C2C colleges are: Sacramento City
College, College of Alameda, Santa Rosa Jr. College, North Orange
County Community College District and San Diego City College. They
will provide instruction, campus supports, job development and
placement services for students who are both DOR and Regional
Center clients. The programs will accept 20 students each year for
three years. Students will receive instruction and support with the
goal of securing competitive integrated employment in a career area
of their choice.
College to Career programs were designed to incorporate the
requirements of Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary
Education Programs for Students with ID as articulated in the
Higher Education Act of 2008 as follows:
- Instruction and program activities are offered at a
college
- Program services support students with ID who are seeking to
continue academic, career and technical and independent living
instruction to prepare for gainful employment
- Support services include guidance and advising
- Students with ID interact with non-ID students for at least ½
of their participation in the programs in academic components and
other opportunities for inclusive coursework and activities
To facilitate student learning and transition to
employment C2C students have opportunities to participate in
volunteer, job shadowing, internships and related activities.
Support services provided to students include job coaching,
educational coaching and use of IPad and other innovative
technologies.
